New Political Economy of Media
This assessment addresses the following subject learning outcomes:
Overview
This module is assessed by means of two essays:
Coursework #1: The first essay (1,000 words / 33%) is due by Wednesday 11th November 2020 at 3pm (to be submitted via KEATS). Students can choose to answer one of the following six questions:
- The emerging Fifth Estate will be as – if not more – effective at holding power to account as the Fourth Estate. Discuss with reference to one or more example.
- ‘Governments of the Industrial World… You have no sovereignty where we gather’. Does John Perry Barlow’s Declaration of the Independence of Cyberspace still hold?
- Are tech platforms media companies?
- How useful are concepts like mediatization and agenda-setting in a world of information abundance?
- To what extent does the new model of digital advertising (or ‘ad tech’) distort the news and political information we receive?
- If ‘news publishers have lost control over distribution’ (Bell, 2016), what economic implications does this have for them?
Coursework #2: The second essay (2,000 words / 67%) is due by Wednesday 13th January 2021 at 3pm (to be submitted via KEATS). Students will be able to choose to answer one of six questions – to be set once the first piece of coursework is submitted.
General Assessment Tips, Structure and Things to Avoid
- Read the question: Make sure you’re aware of what the question is asking you to do, and what the best way to tackle it is. Try to break down the question and consider the different core concepts and issues that you may need to address.
- Plan in advance: Be sure to have a clear plan of how you will approach the question, what the structure of your argument will be, and the literature and references you will use to back up your argument. Factoring in a period of preparatory reading will help you with the last part.
- Use the class reading lists, but read beyond those lists where appropriate:Each class has been accompanied by a range of core readings, and a list of additional readings. These should be a useful resource as well as a guide to further reading. Use the reference lists in books and articles to identify authors and subjects that may be useful. Be conscious of the date of publication of whichever reference list you’re consulting: although they will only reference previous works, they may contain authors who have written other, relevant works between then and now.
- Structure your essay:
- Your essay should include an introduction, your answer to the question (with examples and citations where appropriate), a conclusion, and a list of references
- The introduction should briefly set out your argument and essay structure
- Essays of less than 3,000 words do not require a literature review
- Make sure you stick to the original question, and don’t set (and answer) additional questions. Justify the cases that you will be investigating
- Include critical analysis – explain and explore ‘why,’ rather than just explaining ‘what’. This is the difference between a decent and a very good essay. Reflect on the literature, theories and concepts you are engaging with; analyse how well they fit what you have observed; and situate your argument within the literature you use. Who are the authors and theories you agree with or disagree with? Why are the arguments you align with convincing? What are the relative strengths and weaknesses of these arguments?
- Your conclusion should draw together the main points from your essay (not every single point made), relate them to the central argument and make an assessment of how well this answers the central question. Do notintroduce new concepts in the conclusion, and don’t include speculation about the future unless it ties very closely to your central argument and can be backed up with credible evidence.
Advice regarding specific coursework
- Coursework #1 is only 1,000 words. You will therefore need to make a concise, focused argument. Do not try to cover all the ground or you risk making simplistic generalisations. This is a short essay, but it is an academic one – not an op.ed. (i.e. an opinion column as you might see in a newspaper). You are therefore expected to write it in academic style with reference to examples, theories and with citations.
- Coursework #2 is 2,000 words which, though double the amount, is still not enough to go into more than one or two case studies in detail (if you choose to use case studies). The same points apply regarding the essay style.

If you are looking specifically at developments in other regions of the world (e.g. Latin America, Asia) or in specific countries, look for local peer-reviewed journals there. Please note, however, that preferably all sources should be in English so that markers can establish how well they relate to the argument in the assessment. However, foreign-language peer-reviewed journals are also acceptable, as long as they make up a minority of references.

How useful are concepts like mediatization and agenda setting in a world of information abundance?
The global world has increasingly becoming a hub to huge base of information on a daily basis. The handling and processing of such huge amount of information has become vital function. This function is performed by mass media by using the concepts like mediatization and agenda setting. Thus this essay brings the light upon these important concepts and their usefulness in the present world.
Hospitality industry is very dynamic and it is very important for the organisations in this industry to remain updated with the changing trends. It is only possible when the organisation has an open culture and it promotes congenial relationship among the employees. From the previous researches it has also been identified that the hotels that have respect for their employees and that promote team culture are able to Foster the customer satisfaction. Customer satisfaction is not a new concept and in the past many research studies have been taken place on significance of customer satisfaction in different industries. It must be noted here that the service industries are majorly dependent upon customer satisfaction.
Thus it is evident from the above study that both mediatization and agenda setting has set up their roots strongly in today’s world. While the mediatization has an impact on the political beliefs and other socio cultural beliefs of people, the agenda setting has an impact on the viewpoints and perception of the people about a situation. The media plays a very important role in the world where a lot of information is generated on a daily basis as it is important to highlight the important sections of information and frame the beliefs of the people accordingly.

Expansion is an important strategy for any organisation to enhance its market share and overall profitability. Uber is one of those organisations that has been able to expand its business operations successfully around many countries in the world and is still looking to expand in other countries like Asia. Problems with Journal Peer review
The major problems with journal Peer review are identified in three major aspects that are reproducibility, transparency and trust.it is identified that only a few researchers make their data available for evaluating effectiveness to achieve consistency and quality. Another critical problem related to this is that journals are not allowed to participate in quality assurance and empirical study of their Peer review process. Peer review is one of those processes that are really hard to define. It is also asserted by the author that Peer review is rather based on trust instead of fact. It is also established that the major problem with Peer review is that it is considered as the best method for selecting research for funding. In most of the journals Peer review is a very simple process, there are no fixed principles and measures to select a paper. This has highly affected the quality of the paper and research. In most of the Peer reviewed journals no errors are identified. At the same time this process is very slow as well as expensive. It is really very hard to obtain good data at the cost of Peer review. Along with that, most of the reviewers are not paid for the same. The cost of Peer review has also become a big reason and problem associated with journal Peer review. There are many problems associated with inconsistencies related to peer review. Different reviewers have different opinions about papers and that is also something to be worried about. It is also identified by the author that one can steal ideas of others and present them as their own and there is no way peer-review can identify this thing.
This improvement will help in enhancing the overall process of Peer review in a significant manner. Finally, there is a need to test various things such as implementing reporting standards, effectiveness of various methods, and effectiveness of adding different Technologies for detecting shortcomings in methodological and statistical shortcomings. This is important to make the paper technological and ensure that suitable statistical methods are used for data analysis that provide proper solutions.

Customer satisfaction is not a new concept and in the past many research studies have been taken place on significance of customer satisfaction in different industries. It must be noted here that the service industries are majorly dependent upon customer satisfaction.
On the basis of this project and my overall evaluation of myself as a team member I understood various strengths and weaknesses as a future manager of a team. The first and foremost thing that I understood is that planning is very important. For this project we planned so many things but we could not conceptualize most of those things because of lack of strategic planning (Ajzen, 2011). On the basis of lecture notes I can say that strategic planning helps in conceptualizing our goals and achieving them significantly. This suggests that I need to improve my planning skills. However, in managing communication we also learnt about the importance of listening and I am a good listener and this is my strength (Karam, et al., 2017). Based on my understanding of motivation, I can also say that I was strongly motivated to undertake this project and I also motivated other members to take this properly because this was for our development.

Assignment Solution
Compare and contrast the concepts of narcissistic leadership and Machiavellian leadership
Leadership is referred to as the art to motivate people to act towards achieving common goals. In an organisational setting, this means directing colleagues and workers with a strategy for meeting the needs of the company (Oladipo, Jamilah, Abdul daud, & L., 2013). There are various elements upon which effective leadership is based and one of those important elements is the style of leadership. The style of leadership is based widely on the personality of an individual who is leading and various external factors. The objective of this essay is to compare and contrast the concepts of narcissistic leadership and Machiavellian leadership. It also aims at understanding the strengths and weaknesses of these two leadership approaches. An important aspect of this essay is that it takes into consideration the examples of high-profile contemporary business leaders.
Hospitality industry is very dynamic and it is very important for the organisations in this industry to remain updated with the changing trends. It is only possible when the organisation has an open culture and it promotes congenial relationship among the employees. On the basis of analysis of both leadership styles it can be said that both the styles have their own advantages and disadvantages. It is nearly impossible to decide which one is the better of the two. It actually depends upon the nature of business and current scenario that which one should be utilised. However, the leaders in contemporary organisations make use of narcissistic leadership style (Bagozzi, et al., 2013). It is also evident that most of the leaders of Modern Times are following this leadership style to achieve organisational goals and objectives. It has also been noticed that many leaders are utilising both the leadership style to adopt a regressive style to lead their teams.

Achieving Strategic HRM for organisational success in Australian Retail Sector during Covid-19 and Layoff
Introduction
Covid-19 has been proved to be a bane for most of the people and companies around the world. During this pandemic situation, the Government of many countries including Australia announced a complete lock down and due to that many companies were shut down permanently or temporarily [19]. This situation brought forward a dark face of industry in the form of informed and uninformed layoffs. AHRI, which is the foremost human resource body in Australia reported that there were more than 100000 layoffs in the country within the period of three months [2]. However, the institute also confirmed that there might be various non-reported cases and there is a need to analyse how managers and employees are dealing with this situation. It is also confirmed that the rate of unemployment in the retail sector in Australia has increased tremendously [17] .The focus of this managerial briefing is specifically on the retail sector of Australia.
Conclusion and Recommendations
Every organisation must be prepared to face any circumstances. To deal with unforeseen events it is important to bring in place the strategic human resource management function. The analysis clearly highlighted that the retail companies in Australia were not prepared to deal with the pandemic situation and due to that, they suddenly laid off thousands of employees without any notice. The analysis clearly highlighted that the strategic human resource management function of most of the companies was not in place and due to that they did not show ethical and socially responsible behaviour.

Assessment Task 3 - Digital Futures 2020
This assessment addresses the following subject learning outcomes:
- Task Description:
In groups, students will launch their innovation with a 5 minute video presentation. This video will be
accompanied by a supporting website (created by the group) that must include information on the
scope of the problem, how the solution addresses the problem, and a walkthrough of the solution.
These materials intended to publicise the value of the innovation and how it works to the general
public. Students will also include a 1200-word individual essay on the role of technologies and
platforms in their creative brainstorming process, the communication process, and the problem
solving process. This essay should also reflect on the intended and potential unintended
consequences of this technology with reference to academic and industry literature.
Assignment Solution
The role of technologies and platforms
The role of technologies and platforms in the creative brainstorming process, communication process and problem solving process are integral. I can assert this on the basis of the innovative website that we created in group. While creating the website we followed the structured approach of scoping out a problem, identifying the solution to address the problem along with identifying intended and unintended consequences of technology (Amabile & Pillemer, 2012). The entire process has helped us in understanding the value of innovation and how it can help in solving contemporary issues. The technological innovation that we undertook if entirely backed up by the industry and academic literature.
It is also mentioned in a research study that the significance of any innovation to the world is such that the stakeholders do not care about the negative consequences. Our innovative technology is significant for the current situation. Seeing that many students are losing interest in academics because of the pending work and negative environment around, it was important to bring this innovation to retain their interest. This signifies that the negative impacts do not weigh more than the positives (Amabile & Pillemer, 2012). In this manner undertaking this innovative project was one of the greatest experiences as it helps in understanding the way in which one must deal with a critical situation and come up with solution steps to marginalize the negative impact of anything.

Writing Assignments: Honing your BS Detector
This assessment addresses the following subject learning outcomes:
Science impacts almost every facet of our lives—what we eat, what we wear, our health, how we travel, how we communicate, how we conduct
business, how we make art, and even how we die. Over the last year, the pandemic has made the wide-ranging impacts of science all too clear.
The pandemic has also shown clearly how quickly misinformation about science can spread through social media and other internet sites, and
how this misinformation can cost lives and livelihoods. It’s therefore becoming more and more important that even non-scientists understand
science, so that they can make the best decisions for themselves and those they love.
Where do you get your scientific information? If you’re like most people – you don’t get your scientific information from peer-reviewed journals,
as the writing in these journals is dry and full of jargon and technical terms, making it difficult to understand for those outside that particular field
of research. For example, if you want to know about antibiotic resistance, you probably don’t go to the Journal of Immunology. Instead, you likely
get your scientific information from the media, which plays an important role in translating science for the general public and even for scientists
in other fields. It can tricky to sort out good science reporting from bad, in part because sometimes what sounds like BS is in fact BS, but
sometimes it’s not BS (e.g. check out https://www.improbable.com/ig/winners/ (https://www.improbable.com/ig/winners/) for examples of
good science on crazy topics that might sound like BS, but are actually legit.)

The article assert more pressure on comfort of women and casual sex that does not involve commitment or love. It also mis-represented the fact that those who prefer casual sex get more attracted towards positive genetic traits in short term. Whereas, the scientific study doesn’t take into consideration the aspects of casual sex and preferences. The article also provides that women optimize their evolutionary fitness when they seek different men for long-term and short-term relationships.
